I work nights, which means I know what time it is without looking. It is a habit that has made me good at my job and bad at everything else. So when I saw the little red light on the phone by the window, I did not just see a light. I saw a light that had been on for a while.
The room was above a print shop in La Candelaria and the roof was tin and it had been raining since nine. He had told me to come at eleven thirty. I came at eleven forty because I did not want to look eager, and he opened the door in a vest and no shoes and said, "You are late," and I said, "You are not dressed," and he said, "I am working," and that was the whole negotiation.

The briefcase was open on the table. The phone was on the shelf with the gimbal folded out, the lens pointed at the bed, a red light on the corner of the screen. He saw me look at it.
"It is on," he said. "You agreed."
"I agreed to be filmed."

"And you are being filmed."
"From when?"
He looked at me with those flat dark eyes of his. Late thirties. Stocky. The gold band. The smell of cardamom and rum getting into the room the way heat gets into a room. "From when the camera is on," he said, which is not an answer, and I let it go because his hand was already on my waist and because I had paid and because I wanted to.

The sex was good. I want to say that first, before the rest of it. The sex was good in a way that made me understand I had been having bad sex for years and calling it fine. He took his time with me, which I did not expect from a man who is paid by the hour, and he talked to me in Spanish the whole time, low, not dirty, mostly instructions, donde, asi, espera, and once, when I was close, "No. Not yet. Look at me."
I looked at him. His face was above mine and the rain was going on the tin roof and I could feel the whole city outside the window and the small red light in the corner of my eye like a splinter I could not stop touching with my tongue.
The folder
Afterward I asked to see it.

He was dressed already, sitting on the chair by the window with one sock on, and he looked at me for a moment and then handed me the phone. The file was there, the newest one, with a number for a name. I opened it and looked at the time in the corner of the screen: 22:47.
I had arrived at 23:40.
"Explain this," I said.

He took the phone back and looked at it himself, as if he had not known, as if he did not check this every night. Then he put it face down on his knee. "The camera starts when I arrive," he said.
"You arrived at ten forty seven?"
"I arrived at ten forty seven. I sat here. I checked the light. I put the money in the briefcase. I waited." He shrugged. "Then you knocked."

"So you filmed an empty room for an hour."
"I filmed the room," he said. "The room is mine tonight. I paid for it. I film what is mine."
This is the angel of bogota's arithmetic: the room first, the man after. I sat on the edge of the bed with the sheet around me and thought about the hour of footage before I existed in it. The empty chair. The door. The window with the rain in it. His hands moving through the frame, setting things right. And then me, at the door, on the screen, arriving with my wet jacket and my stupid careful eleven forty, not knowing I had walked into a frame that had been waiting for me.

"That is not what I agreed to," I said.
"No," he said. "But it is not a thing that hurts you. It is a room." He leaned forward, elbows on his knees, and for a moment he looked tired, tired in a way that had nothing to do with the hour. "You want me to delete it?"
I thought about it. I thought about the hour of empty room, and about the fact that he had been in this city for years doing this and had a rule for everything, and about the fact that his face was never in the frame, which meant that the hour of empty room was, in a way, the only part of the tape that was entirely his.

"No," I said.
He nodded slowly. "Bien."
The second time
He asked if I wanted to do it again, on camera, knowing. I said yes. I am not going to pretend that is a contradiction. There is a difference between being filmed and knowing you are being filmed, and the difference is the whole thing.

He set the phone on the shelf and turned it until the little screen faced him and the lens faced me, and he said, "Sit there. Do not move." Then he came to me and knelt on the floor between my knees and took me in his mouth, and I watched the red light over his shoulder the entire time, and it was the most exposed I have ever felt in my life. He was good at it. He was unhurried and thorough and he used his hand with his mouth and he stopped every time I got close, and by the fourth time I was gripping the edge of the mattress and saying his name, which I was not supposed to do, and he pulled off and said, "Not my name," and went back to it.
When I came he stayed where he was and took it, and then he sat back on his heels and wiped his mouth with the back of his wrist and looked at me with something that was almost fondness.
"Now you understand the camera," he said.

"I think I do."
"Good." He stood, and put the phone in the briefcase, and closed it. "The angel of bogota does not film a man who does not want to be filmed. But he films the room. The room is always the room."
At the door he stopped, the way he always does, and said, "You work nights. Sleep in the day. Do not walk home in the rain." Then he was gone, and I stood in the doorway of a rented room above a print shop and listened to his steps go down and out, and I locked the door behind him, because he had not asked me not to.

The file is still on his phone. I have thought about asking for a copy and I have not asked, because I am not sure which hour I would watch. The one with me in it, or the one before, when the room was empty and he was moving around inside it, arranging the light.
